Who Must Complete Continuing Education?

Active Sales Associates & Brokers

All Florida-licensed real estate sales associates and broker associates holding an active license must complete 14 hours of FREC-approved continuing education during each renewal cycle to maintain active status and renew their license.

Post-Licensing vs. Continuing Education

New licensees completing their first renewal have different requirements. Post-licensing education (45 hours for sales associates, 60 hours for brokers) applies to first-time renewals. The 14-hour CE requirement applies to all subsequent renewals. This course is designed for licensees in their second or later renewal cycle.

Voluntary Inactive License Holders

Even licensees on voluntary inactive status must complete the 14-hour CE requirement to maintain their license in good standing. The requirement is the same regardless of whether you're actively practicing.

The 14-Hour CE Requirement: Topic Breakdown

The Florida Real Estate Commission requires that the 14-hour CE course cover three mandatory topic areas. This course divides the 14 hours across 14 units, each focused on a specific subject:

Core Law

Updates to Florida real estate statutes, FREC rules, and regulatory changes that affect licensees' daily practice and obligations.

Business Ethics

Professional standards, ethical practices, agency relationships, and the duties owed to clients and customers under Florida law.

Specialty Education

Practical topics relevant to Florida real estate practice, including contracts, fair housing, investment property, and current market issues.

Florida License Renewal Cycles

Sales Associate & Broker Renewal: Florida real estate licenses renew on a two-year cycle. Sales associates and brokers renew by March 1st or September 30th, depending on the initial license issuance date.

Deadline: All 14 hours must be completed before your license expiration date. We recommend completing CE well in advance to avoid last-minute issues.

Renewal Method: Licenses are renewed online through the DBPR Online Services portal. You'll need your license number and the completion information reported by your course provider.

FREC and DBPR: Who Regulates What?

Florida Real Estate Commission (FREC)

FREC is the regulatory body that governs real estate licensing in Florida. It sets the education requirements, approves course curricula, and enforces real estate law. FREC operates under the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.

Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR)

DBPR is the state agency that manages license issuance, renewal, and records. When you complete a CE course, the provider reports your completion to DBPR, which credits it toward your license renewal.
